We head to the nearby park. Sam goes storming ahead, covering himself in green stains as he launches himself onto the grass over and over again. His knees must be black with bruising. Once Harry shows him some of his football tricks, such as the Wraparound, Sam is captivated and becomes his newest and biggest fan. Thoughts of becoming an assassin are forgotten as Sam declares he’s going to play soccer.

‘Harry’s just made my day,’ says Mike. ‘I’ve wanted to get Sam away from the computer and into some sport. Soccer club, here we come.’

‘We’ll sit over there to watch and grab a drink,’ says Nina, giving Mike a kiss on the cheek.

‘Okay, honey.’

We saunter towards a small cafe with an outside seating area.

‘So missus, you’re looking well,’ says Nina. ‘You look healthy. I can’t tell you’re pregnant at all.’

‘Good.’

‘How many weeks now?’

‘Twenty-one. I’ve put a little weight on, but it’s going all over. Plus, Harry and everyone thinks I’ve started the TV programme now. How ironic that I have to hide fruit skins and vegetable peelings while leaving burger wrappers throughout the house.’

‘Is Harry not questioning you?’

‘He hasn’t got a clue. I guess he knows what he married. It wouldn’t be the stupidest thing I’ve done, getting fat for a TV programme.’

‘No, he’s yet to discover the stupidest thing you’ve done.’

‘Hey. I have my reasons. I want to make sure he takes this trip with his mother. They’ve talked about it for years. They are so excited about it. His mother can’t wait. I figure she deserves the time with her son. It’s not like I’m depriving him of his baby, just the pregnancy. I bet Gabe wishes Stella had deprived him of hers.’

‘What if you become like her? He’ll suss it then.’

‘If he discovers I’m pregnant then I’ll confess. But he’ll cancel the holiday with his mother. It’s just unfortunate timing.’

‘How are your appointments going?’

‘Really good. Come to the loos and I’ll update you.’

We head to the toilets giggling.

‘Oh, my God, I can’t believe you’re having a baby. Oh, you’re making me broody now.’

‘Well, why don’t you have one?’

Nina looks glum. ‘I’m not sure Mike or Sam is ready for that. It’s too soon.’

I place a hand on her arm, ‘Oh, Nina. I’m sorry. Are things not working out?’

‘I guess I expected I’d move in and everything would be like a dream. Stupid really. That’s not real life at all, is it? It’s difficult putting roots down in a house where Sam’s mother lived. He doesn’t want her things moved. I understand that. But I can’t place an ornament, a picture, a cushion. Nothing. My things are still in boxes in the spare room. Mike’s on his son’s side. Says it’s going to take time. The thing is, I’m almost thirty, I don’t have a lot of time.’

‘Oh, Nina. I’m sorry. Here I am blathering on about my baby and you want one and can’t have one.’

‘It’s not your fault. I’m the one who fell in love with a widower.
